The Eastern Free State town of Fouriesburg is situated in the scenic Brandwater Basin, surrounded by the Maluti, Rooiberg and Witteberg mountain ranges, on the border of Lesotho. Fouriesburg offers unique scenic beauty, activities for nature and adventure enthusiasts, arts and culture, places of historical and architectural interest, small town hospitality and perhaps most importantly, peace and quiet.

Fouriesburg is 35km from the bustling village of Clarens and a comfortable commuting distance from three of South Africa’s major urban centres: Johannesburg (350km), Durban (400km) and Bloemfontein (250km).

Farm tours
Fouriesburg and the surrounding area is known for farming cherries, asparagus, sunflowers, beans and mielies, amongst other agricultural products. A few working farms are open to day visitors and offer tractor rides and product sampling. There is also a growing trend toward eco-farming in the area.

4x4 trails and safaris
From peaceful day and overnight trips to the annual Ventersburg Challenge, there is some spectacular off-road driving here for everyone. In addition Fouriesburg is within easy reach of Lesotho's famous mountain passes.

Quadbike trails and safaris
Fouriesburg offers some of the most scenic quad trails in the area. Experienced local operators and guides supply the quads, or alternatively, hitch your 4-wheeler and join us for some fun.

Horse riding trails
Fouriesburg is horse country! Selected local farms and stables offer rides for all levels of experience from a frisky morning canter to half-day trips or a sunset ride, through to overnight trails in the mountains.


Fouriesburg Rose Show
The annual Fouriesburg Rose Show hosted by the Groenfontein Garden Club in November is a fragrant experience for competitors and spectators alike.

Clarens Craft Beer Festival
Pouring more than 50 different craft beers and ciders from across the country, this festival in February is a true celebration of craft beer with a large variety of award-winning brews.

Ficksburg Cherry Festival
The Cherry Festival in November is the longest-running crop festival in South Africa. It draws thousands of visitors each year with activities that include cherry orchard tours and tastings, cherry product competitions, veteran vehicle displays and equestrian events along with beer, wine and food fiestas.


Mountain bike trails
Fouriesburg has rocks, mud, dirt roads, downhills, scenery, sunny weather, local mountain biking professionals and dedicated trails. Don't forget to pack the helmets!

Hiking trails
With private nature reserves and large farms running across beautiful rugged sandstone mountainscapes Fouriesburg is a haven for hikers. From strolls up the nearest hill to overnight trips deep into the remote mountains, there is something for everyone.

Mountains, valleys, rivers, game farms, nature reserves, eco-farms... it's all wild in Fouriesburg!

The Caledon River offers fishing for yellows and trout. Many farm dams are stocked by the owners with popular angling species such as bass, trout and carp. Often it just takes a friendly request from the farmer or a small token fee to fish.

Fouriesburg is perfectly situated as a last stop before crossing the Lesotho border through Caledonspoort, making it a perfect base from which to launch tours into the interior of the rugged wild and beautiful Mountain Kingdom. Some excellent guided tour packages are offered by various tour operators based in and around the town.

A variety of shops and spaces in and around Fouriesburg offer unexpected insights into what the resourceful and creative people in our community are up to.

Whether you want to simply hang out and meet the locals, or watch the big game, or park your bike and tuck into a hearty breakfast, there's plenty on offer. Enjoy authentic country cuisine beside a log fire, take a drive into Lesotho for a special meal, or savour artistic cuisine on a verandah with spectacular views.
